Overview
Why over-the-counter whitening doesn't do much.
Drugstore whitening strips contain very low concentrations of peroxide (around 6%) and are designed to be safe for unsupervised use — which means they're also not very effective. Most patients see modest results, often with significant sensitivity.
Professional whitening uses pharmacy-grade peroxide (15–35%) under controlled conditions with desensitizing agents and protective gum barriers. The result is dramatically faster, dramatically more effective whitening — often 6–8 shades — with less sensitivity overall.

Who benefits most from whitening.
Great results: surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco. Mild to moderate age-related yellowing. Generally healthy teeth and gums.
Modest results: gray-tinted teeth, tetracycline staining (veneers may be a better answer). Not a fit: active cavities, significant gum recession, existing crowns/veneers/bonding (these don't whiten), or pregnant/nursing patients.
